The ICJ, member of the Jury of the Martin Ennals Foundation Award for Human Rights Defenders, announced today that Lida Yusupova has been selected as the winner of the 2004 Martin Ennals Award.
Lida Yusupova has been since 3 years the coordinator in Grozny of the human rights organisation Memorial. It is a small office with only 6 staff members and one of the few human rights organisations still operating in Chechnya, providing the world with crucial information on violations of human rights in this Russian republic.
Lida Yusupova collects testimonies from those victims who dare to come to the Grozny office but also goes herself out to the places where killings and disappearances have occurred. She accompanies the victims in their claims to the Russian Army and Security Services and provides legal assistance to the extent that the judicial system still functions in that part of Russia.
The Chairman of the Jury of the MEA, Hans Thoolen, called Lida Yusupova one of the most courageous women in Europe today. He states that “there is complete consensus among all human rights organisations that Lida Yusupova deserves the award for her tireless efforts in a situation of war and extreme danger, with increased risk for women”. Moreover, the Grozny office has to function in almost complete isolation, the access to Chechnya for international NGOs, intergovernmental organisations and independent media being very restricted. Last year Lida Yusupova’s office was the target of a direct attack by the army but the staff has continued its indispensable monitoring work.
The ceremony will take place in Geneva on 7 April 2004. It will be transmitted live by the Swiss French Television and re-transmitted by TV5 to millions of households.
The Martin Ennals Award for Human Rights Defenders (MEA) is a unique collaboration among ten non-governmental human rights organisations. The Jury is composed of the following: Amnesty International, Defence for Children, German Diakonie, Human Rights Watch, Huridocs, International Alert, International Commission of Jurists, International Federation for Human Rights, International Service for Human Rights and the World Organisation Against Torture.

Martin Ennals (1927-1991) was instrumental to the modern human rights movement. He was the first Secretary-General of Amnesty International and the driving force behind many other organisations. His deep desire was to see more cooperation and solidarity among NGOs: the MEA is evidence that this is possible.

Defensora de derechos humanos chechena recibe prestigioso premio del movimiento de derechos humanos
La Comisión Internacional de Juristas, miembro del Jurado de la Fundación Martín Ennals para los Defensores de Derechos Humanos (MEA), se complace en anunciar que Lida Yusupova ha sido laureada con el Premio Martín Ennals para los defensores de derechos humanos.
Lida Yusupova es la coordinadora en Grozni de la organización Memorial desde hace 3 años. La oficina de dicha organización en Grozni, una de las pocas organizaciones que aun operan en Chechenia, cuenta con sólo 6 integrantes y comunica al mundo informaciones cruciales acerca de las violaciones en materia de derechos humanos en esa república rusa.
La Sra. Yusupova recoge testimonios de las víctimas que aun se atreven a acudir a su oficina y visita personalmente aquellos lugares donde se han cometido graves violaciones de derechos humanos y desapariciones forzadas; asimismo, atiende a las víctimas en sus reclamaciones ante las autoridades militares y los servicios de seguridad rusos y les presta asistencia legal dentro de los límites del deteriorado sistema judicial checheno.
El Presidente del Jurado del MEA, Hans Thoolen, considera que Lida Yusupova es una de las mujeres más valientes de Europa y afirma que “existe un consenso total entre todas las organizaciones de derechos humanos en que Lida Yusupova merece el premio por sus constantes esfuerzos en una situación de guerra y de extremo peligro, en especial para las mujeres”. Además, la oficina de Grozni funciona en aislamiento casi total, ya que las ONGs internacionales, las organizaciones intergubernamentales y la prensa independiente no pueden acceder fácilmente a Chechenia. A pesar de los ataques militares del año pasado, el personal de Memorial en Grozni continúa realizando su indispensable labor.
La ceremonia de entrega del Premio tendrá lugar el 7 de abril de 2004 en Ginebra y será transmitida en directo a través de la Televisión suiza y a millones de televidentes por el canal TV5.
El Premio Martín Ennals de Derechos Humanos (MEA) es el resultado de la colaboración única entre diez organizaciones internacionales en materia de defensa de derechos humanos. Martín Ennals (1927-1991), primer Secretario General de Amnistía Internacional, tuvo un papel decisivo en el movimiento moderno de derechos humanos. Motor de otras muchas asociaciones, deseaba profundamente que hubiera más cooperación y solidaridad entre las ONGs: el MEA prueba que ello es posible.
