Representatives of judiciaries and judicial training academies from across South and Southeast Asia have agreed to take effective measures to ensure that a gender perspective is incorporated into their judicial roles and functions. In particular, they have committed to work toward the adoption of Bangkok General Guidance for Judges on Applying a Gender Perspective.
The ICJ, together with the Ateneo de Naga Law School and Ateneo de Manila School of Law Legal Services Center, hosted a Seminar on Women’s Access to Justice and the Role of Legal Aid Providers on 25 and 26 February 2023 in Lapu-Lapu City, Cebu, Philippines.
ICJ welcomes the 18 January 2023 decision of the Philippine Court of Tax Appeals dismissing four tax evasion charges against journalist and Nobel laureate Maria Ressa and the online news outlet Rappler. Ressa still faces one tax case, and has an appeal pending before the Supreme Court of the Philippines seeking to overturn her 2020 cyber libel conviction.
The Philippine judiciary should continue to work to ensure that the principles of gender equality and non-discrimination are fully integrated into decision-making processes. This was the core message in the series of Judicial Dialogues on Access to Justice for Women conducted by the International Commission of Jurists in partnership with the Supreme Court of the Philippines between 17 and 22 November 2022 in Manila.
The International Commission of Jurists (ICJ) convened its inaugural regional judicial workshop on digital rights for 28 justice sector actors from eight countries in Southeast and South Asia to discuss responses to the most salient digital rights challenges in the region on 5 – 6 November.
