International Commission of Jurists appeals for an end to disturbances in Romania

Mr. Niall MacDermot, the Secretary-General of the ICJ has issued the following press statement today.

The ICJ has received with dismay news of the tragic events in recent days in Romania, and calls upon the government of Romania to take urgent action to bring to justice all those responsible for these disturbances.

These events are of profound concern to all those seeking to build a new and united Europe on the basis of the spontaneous movement for free and democratic governments.

We trust that the Romanian people and their authorities at all levels will take immediately the necessary steps to prevent any repetition of these events, and will do all in their power to bring about unity and harmony between them and the minorities in their country.
