ICJ contribution to Council of Europe’s recommendation on human rights and the environment

17 Dec 2021 | Advocacy, Legal submissions

The ICJ submitted today a contribution to the work of a Council of Europe Committee drafting a recommendation on human rights and the protection of the environment.

The ICJ noted that the Draft Recommendation can make an important contribution to the development of Council of Europe human rights standards that address the urgent threats that environmental damage, biodiversity loss and climate change pose to the protection of human rights.

In its contribution, the ICJ strongly supports the recognition within the Council of Europe of the right to a safe, clean, healthy and sustainable environment and provides further recommendations to streamline the text with States’ obligations under international human rights law and international environmental law both within the Council of Europe and UN standards.
