Nepal: Transitional Justice Bill needs to protect victims, not abusers

Nepal’s proposed law disregards domestic and international legal standards

(Geneva, 23 March 2023) — A bill to amend Nepal’s transitional justice legislation does not fully meet the country’s domestic law or international legal obligations and will not provide justice for victims if adopted in its current form, Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch and the International Commission of Jurists said today.

The ICJ calls on the Nicaraguan authorities to take immediate steps to restore the rule of law and democratic principles, and end systematic violations of human rights in the country. The authorities must immediately release all persons arbitrarily detained, including political prisoners and ensure that people are able to exercise their human rights and fundamental freedoms.

At a workshop for lawyers focusing on the Elimination of Gender Discriminatory Attitudes and Behaviors Towards Women and Enhancing Access to Justice for Women organized by the International Commission of Jurists (ICJ), in collaboration with Nepal Bar Association (NBA), participating legal practitioners agreed that gender stereotypes and gender discriminatory behaviors pose major barriers for women who are in their quest to access justice.
