The ICJ expresses its warmest congratulations to Vice-President and Commission Member Theo C. Van Boven on his appointment as United Nations Special Rapporteur on the question of Torture.
The appointment by the present Chairman of the United Nations Commission on Human Rights, Leandro Despuoy, was announced by the UN last week and is immediately effective.
An ICJ Commissioner since 1991, Theo van Boven has served the international human rights movement with energy and distinction in a wide range of roles. His contributions have included service as Director of the United Nations Division of Human Rights from 1977-82, two-time member of the UN Sub-Commission on the Prevention of Discrimination and Protection of Minorities, member of the Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, and Professor of Law at the University of Maastricht in the Netherlands.
The ICJ is gratified that Theo van Boven will have the opportunity to fully engage his wisdom and expertise in the world wide struggle against torture.
