The ICJ’s publication on Principles on Indigenous and other Customary or Traditional Justice Systems, Human Rights and the Rule of Law has been published and is now available in English, French and Spanish.

The Principles were developed over a three-year consultative process that included expert jurists and legal practitioners from around the world, working in both formal and informal justice systems.

The ICJ developed the Principles with the aim of assisting those acting within indigenous or other traditional customary systems; State officials administering justice; civil society; and international stakeholders to better secure equal access to justice for all, human rights, and the rule of law.

The Principles complement and provide guidance for the implementation of existing international law and instruments.
