International conference about the African Court on Human and Peoples Rights

The ICJ and other partners organize an international conference titled “The African Court on Human and Peoples Rights, the establishment and the challenges”.

Many international, African and Arab diplomatic and juristic institutions, and representative of the American and European Court for Human Rights will participate in the conference, organized jointly by the Arab Center for the Independence of Judiciary and Legal Profession, the ICJ and the African Coalition for the African Court, on August 2nd and 3rd 2006, at Sheperd Hotel, Cairo.

They include Mr. Nicholas Howen the Secretary General of the International Commission of Jurists, Mr. Jonathan Wood, Mr. Raji Sourani, member of the executive committee of the ICJ, Mrs. Jennifer Schenese, Associate Situation Analyst (International Criminal Court), Mr. Ibrahima Kane, President of the African Coalition for the African Court, Dr. Amin Mekki Madani, Regional Representative of the U.N Higher Commissioner for Human Rights office, professor Alan Miller, Director of M‚Grigors Rights, Judge Hamdi Farg Fanoush of the African Court on Human and Peoples Rights and Dr. Alison Stuart, Director of the training programme at Robert Jordan‚s University. In addition to many experts in the field of international and humanitarian law from Libya, Morocco, Sudan, Tunisia, Palestine and Egypt and a lot of diplomatic, Juristic and media institutions.

The opening session will start with a word of welcome by the Arab Center for the Independence of Judiciary and Legal Profession, the National Council for Human Rights, the League of Arab States, the International Commission of Jurists and the African Coalition for the African Court on Human Rights.

The conference deals with the establishment and the role of the African Court in protect and support human rights and the relation between it and related regional and international organizations. And studying the means of benefiting from previous experiences like the American and European Court for Human Rights and the International Criminal Court.

This conference will be held within the work frame of the center as it is the north African coordinator of the African Coalition for the African Court on Human Rights. Furthermore the center will hold a reception in the honor of the participants after the end of the first day activities at 07.00 in Omer Elkhayam hall, Sheperd Hotel.
