UN Side-event: Lawyers Under Threat: Increasing Suppression of the Legal Profession in Belarus

The International Commission of Jurists (ICJ), together with the American Bar Association Center for Human Rights (ABA CHR), the Lawyers for Lawyers (L4L), the International Bar Association Human Rights Institute (IBAHRI), and Polish Helsinki Foundation for Human Rights (HFHR) are co-organizing a side event during the 47th UN HR Council session, on July 6th, at 15:00 CEST/ 9 am EST.

This side-event will address the recent cases of attacks against independent lawyers and the legal profession in Belarus in the aftermath of Belarus’s 2020 presidential election. The attacks against lawyers include prosecution and detention, disbarment and requirements for lawyers to re-qualify in order to practice law, with the aim of effective disbarment.

The speakers will include: Baroness Helena Kennedy, IBAHRI Director; Ms. Patricia Lee Refo, ABA President; Ms. Anaïs Marin, United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Situation of Human Rights in Belarus; Justice Radmila Dicic, ICJ Vice-President, Commissioner & Judge of the Supreme Court of Serbia; Ms. Sophie de Graaf, L4L Executive Director; Ms. Olga Salomatova , HFHR International Program Coordinator; and Ms. Liudmila Kazak, Belarusian Attorney.

The ICJ has previously intervened in cases of attacks against lawyers in Belarus.
